Visions-V_ideas, Performances

The action, almost one festival: “Visions-V_ideas, Performances” celebrates 5 years since its launch at BETON7. In April 2014, it was stated that the set of actions of the festival aimed at exploring the interface between performance and video in the specific frame of the Votanikos neighbourhood – the site of BETON7, Center for the Arts.

A review may be necessary, not in the sense of a conclusion but an assessment for future adjustments. According to a terminology, performance is at the crossroad of the living arts (arts vivants), which rely on the human body as the main tool, in order to found its artistic idiosyncrasy or specificity (dance for example) and the visual arts, where physical elements allow to shape primarily spatial structures (e.g. sculpture). At this crossroad, the video is entering, which is the field, the opportunity to create a new version of what is happening at the aforementioned crossroad from aesthetic and social point of view.

In the five consecutive events (2014-8), artists from different horizons and schools, from different generations and countries (e.g. www.degrafiotis.com/?p=6228 & www.beton7.com) offered their concerns, their works and the gestures to show the numerous video and performance connections (and vice versa) and the inter-involvement difficulties, almost co-engagement the Festival with the Votanikos community. In this spirit, and to show connections, videos that approach the performance were presented (and will be presented), in a more historical perspective, shown (and will be shown) videos produced in the festival or for the festival, as well and videos as essential  components of the performances as well. This creates a range of videos from documentation to experimental production of video-art projects, always referring to performance. At the same time, in the realization of the performances, an attempt was made to test various techniques, expressive rhetorical and aesthetic principles that the art of the video conquered – that is, the video functions as an expressive variable and as a field of processing new methods for the exploration of images “in time and in audio “. As to the interaction with the local community, this process in a socio-cultural environment with complex historical context, such as Votanikos, is a matter of apparently long-lasting and innovative effort.

Thanking warmly the artists, technicians and organisers, as well as the institutions which contributed to the realisation of all actions at the material level and on the level of ideas and perspectives. As technologies increasingly define the expressions, the scope and the boundaries of the arts, as the demand for the interdisciplinary approach goes hand in hand with the desire to produce interdisciplinary art works or interdisciplinary art works, and in an internationalised in turbulent and fluid environment, it would not be off to assume that the “five years” experience will be the precursor phase of a major future course for the evolution of the triple: image, video and performance.
